Welcome to Greifswald!
A rendezvous with Greifswald
Would you like to get to know Greifswald, West Pomerania’s hanseatic and University City? We would like to offer you the opportunity to discover the city located beside the most beautiful of sailing waters, stretching between the islands of Rügen and Usedom. Explore Greifswald on foot, by bike, or take a city sightseeing tour by bus or boat.
Caspar David Friedrich – the city’s most famous son
Greifswald is the birthplace of the painter Casper David Friedrich. Many of his paintings, including the “Ruine Eldena im Riesengebirge” are to be found in the Pomerania State Museum. At the Caspar David Friedrich Centre, a multimedia-based museum detailing the life and work of the German Romantic painter has been established, as well as a workshop where the making of soap and candles is demonstrated. These were the handcrafts which Friedrich’s father practiced at this historic location. You can familiarise yourself with different stages in Friedrich’s life, as well as with the subjects which inspired his paintings on the 18-kilometre long Caspar David Friedrich Way.
Festivals and folk festivals
You just have to be there: Whether festivals, theatre performances, literature events, concerts, folk festivals or themed markets, Greifswald is the city of culture in the Germany’s North East. Be sure to book your entrance tickets and accommodation early.
