16 World class research Friedrich Loeffler Institut FLI The Federal Research Institute for Animal Health operates from seven locations across Germany and has its head quarters on the island of Riems a district of the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald The objectives of its work are to protect against infections epizootics and infectious diseases transmissible from animals to humans Around 420 staff currently work at the site Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics IPP The aim of fusion research at the IPP is to develop a climate and environmentally friendly power plant The energy is to be generated as in the sun from the fusion of atomic nuclei Scientists engineers and tradespeople from all four corners of the globe have built the Wendelstein 7 X fusion research facility in Greifswald to this end It is the largest fusion plant of its type in the world designed to investigate the suitability of the construction as a power plant Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology INP At INP the largest non university research institute for low temperature plasmas in Europe more than 200 staff are currently conducting research on physical plasmas The technology is used among other things for coating surfa ces decontaminating air and liquids sterilising food and in the medical sector and electrical engineering Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald The institute s academic programme focuses on inviting academics for research visits to Greifswald within the fra mework of the Alfried Krupp Fellows Programme organi sing academic lectures conferences symposia and summer schools and developing young scientists
