Elections and the way in which they are conducted are an essential feature and necessary part of every democracy. Those who vote contribute to the political decision-making process, exercising influence, representing their own interests, and deciding on the compostion of the respective popular representative bodies.
Elections for the European Parliament, the German Bundestag, the Landtag (state parliament), the district councils and the municipal representatives and mayors take place at regular intervals in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
European Parliament and German Bundestag Elections
Elections to the European Parliament are held every five years. The federal government determines the exact election date.
EU citizens who do not participate in the European elections in their home country have the right to vote in their place of residence in Germany. To participate in the election in Germany, they must be registered on the electoral roll. This is done by means of an application to the municipal electoral authority. If these citizens have already participated in the 1999 to 2014 European elections in Germany, they are registered on the electoral roll and do not need to re-register, again.
The Federal Election Commissioner is responsible for the European Parliament elections. Further information in all other European languages can be found at www.bundeswahlleiter.de.
In the parliamentary elections members of the German parliament (Bundestag) are elected. The usual parliamentary term is four years.
Those who do not possess German citizenship are not entitled to vote. EU citizens are thus not entitled to vote, unlike in European and local elections, even if they are residents in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The electoral territory - the Federal Republic of Germany - is divided into 299 constituencies. At the Bundestag elections, the Kreiswahlleiter (district election official) for the Vorpommern-Rügen county district is responsible for constituency 15 (Vorpommern-Rügen - Vorpommern-Greifswald I).
You can find comprehensive information about the European and Bundestag elections on the websites of the State Election Commissioner and Federal Election Commissioner.
