Hanseatic League

The Hanseatic League is a network of 208 cities established in 1980 in the countries of Belgium, Germany, England, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia and Sweden. The task of the Hanseatic League is to resurrect the spirit of the European city, to promote the self-awareness of the Hanseatic cities and to develop cooperation between these cities with the aim of contributing to the economic, cultural, social and political unification of Europe.

Since 1994, the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald has been active in the new alliance of the Hanseatic cities. The annual International Hanseatic Days – a major festival for all member cities where they showcase their cities with information stands, music and culture – form the platform for the cities presenting themselves together to the outside world.

Every year young people from Greifswald take part in the YouthHansa, an event which takes place during the International Hanseatic Days. Artists from Greifswald  have also been participating in HanseARTWorks for many years.
