Close contacts and vibrant exchange with partners at home and abroad have always played an important role in the development of the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald. Maintaining this tradition is the main task of the Twin City Partnerships & International Contacts department.
Especially now in the 21st century with a growing Europe without internal borders, Greifswald is seizing the opportunity to develop its internationalism into viable, economically and culturally successful connections.
Over the last few years and decades, hundreds of guests from the twin and linked cities have been welcomed to Greifswald. And the same number of Greifswald citizens have been in contact with people from the twin cities.
But it’s not only numerous guests that have found their way to Greifswald from the twin cities, but good ideas, too. Our major festival of Northern European culture, "Nordischer Klang" (Nordic Sound), would be unimaginable, for example, without the involvement of our Scandinavian twin cities. Greifswald’s plans for climate protection have gained additional inspiration through ideas from our linked cities leading, for example, to a concrete plan of action in the "50 kommunale Klimapartnerschaften" (50 communal climate partnerships) project, created in conjunction with Pomerode. Greifswald schools, sport clubs, the music school, the University of Greifswald student theatre, day care centres, St. Spiritus, the Senior Citizens' Advisory Board and numerous other Greifswald institutions maintain contacts with the twin and linked cities, organising projects, meetings, joint sporting and art events and more.
The University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald is also an active member of the “Hanse der Neuzeit” (“New Hansa”) and Union of the Baltic Cities networks as well as, from 2016, the global Cities for Life – Cities against the Death Penalty network.
We’d love you to learn more about Greifswald’s friendships with other cities and our international connections on these pages. If you have any questions, are looking for support for your ideas or would like to get in touch, please do contact Ms Dahms, our Officer for Twin City Partnerships and International Contacts.
