On 16 December 2008, the declaration of the Climate Protection Alliance was signed. The establishment of the alliance was based on the realisation that climate change has already taken place, and that the problems that are associated with it must be responded to at a local level in a suitable, coordinated and networked manner. The aim of the alliance is to reduce the total emissions of the city. By 2020, the city's CO2 emissions should be reduced by 14% compared to 2005. In this context, sustainable and resource-conserving energy generation is important, as is the improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings and household technologies. The development of sustainable mobility approaches is a further challenge. The public are informed about the activities of the Climate Protection Alliance and are called upon to support the implementation of the climate protection targets.
The members of the alliance are: the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald, Stadtwerke Greifswald (public utility), the University of Greifswald, the WVG and WGG housing associations, WITENO GmbH, Sparkasse Vorpommern, and ADTRAN.
